What does it take to successfully collect MEG data from infants?
As Dr. Christina Zhao explains in our latest MEGIN Spotlight, testing babies is a little like putting on a show — with plenty of preparation and “dress rehearsals” needed to ensure the experience runs smoothly for both infants and their parents.
From creating a calm and engaging environment to preparing parents and infants for the recording process, collecting high-quality data from awake infants requires a great deal of planning.
These challenges — and the solutions developed at the I-LABS MEG Center over many years — are explored in the open-access paper Infant brain imaging using magnetoencephalography: Challenges, solutions, and best practices. The paper shares practical recommendations for data collection, acquisition, preprocessing and analysis, with a focus on studying awake and moving infants.
The team has also created an accompanying video offering a behind-the-scenes look at how infant MEG sessions are prepared and carried out.
